Nötkey Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-03-03 Version: 1.0 Last updated: 2026-03-03
Introduction
Nötkey is a mobile application for Android that helps users maintain separate phone environments — a Public Profile and a Private Profile — using Android's Device Owner capability.
This Privacy Policy explains what information Nötkey collects, how it is used, and what it does not do.
If you have questions about this policy, contact us through the in-app support option.
1. What information Nötkey collects
1.1 Information stored on your device (not transmitted to Nötkey)
Nötkey stores the following information locally on your device:
Operational event logs
Nötkey records structured events to support its own functionality. These logs are stored only on your device and are not transmitted to Nötkey or any third party under normal operation. Examples of what these logs may include:
- App start and initialization events
- Subscription tier validation events (the result of checking your subscription, not the content of your subscription data)
- Profile-switching events (a record that a switch occurred, not the content of either profile)
- Billing query results (the outcome of contacting Google Play Billing, not your payment information)
- Policy enforcement events (a record that a rule was applied, without internal implementation detail)
These logs do not include:
- The content of your messages, photos, files, or other data
- Your passwords or PINs
- Your name, email address, or phone number (unless you provide one for support purposes)
- Device identifiers such as your IMEI or advertising ID
Subscription entitlement state
Nötkey stores a local record of your subscription tier (Free, Guardian, or higher) to determine which features you have access to. This information is derived from Google Play and stored on your device.
Configuration and settings
Nötkey stores your app configuration and feature settings locally on your device.
1.2 Information processed by Google Play (Billing)
Nötkey uses Google Play Billing to manage subscriptions. When you purchase or manage a subscription, Google Play processes your payment and billing information directly. Nötkey receives only confirmation of your subscription status — it does not receive or store your payment method, billing address, or credit card information.
Google Play's handling of payment data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy, available at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
1.3 Crash reports and diagnostics
If your device has Android's automatic crash reporting enabled (via Google's crash reporting service), information about application errors may be included in those reports and sent to Google. Nötkey does not control or have access to this data directly.
Nötkey does not operate its own crash reporting service in the current version of the application.
1.4 Support communications
If you contact Nötkey support and provide information (such as your email address, phone model, or a description of your issue), that information is used to respond to your support request. It is not used for marketing or shared with third parties for advertising purposes.
2. What Nötkey does NOT collect
Nötkey does not:
- Collect your name, email address, or phone number as part of normal app operation
- Access the content of your messages, photos, documents, or other files in either profile
- Read or transmit your passwords or PINs
- Collect or transmit your device's IMEI, advertising ID, or precise location
- Share your data with advertising networks or data brokers
- Operate a server-side database of your personal information in the current version of the application
- Transmit local event logs to any server under normal operation
3. Profile data and isolation
Nötkey creates and manages two separate Android environments — a Public Profile and a Private Profile. Android's multi-user system enforces isolation between these environments. Nötkey does not access the content of either environment beyond what is necessary to enforce profile-level policies (such as applying subscription tier restrictions or responding to a panic event).
The data in your Private Profile is not visible to Nötkey's processes running in the Public Profile, and vice versa, except where Android's own security model permits cross-profile management actions by a Device Owner.
4. Panic and data erasure
Nötkey includes a panic feature that, when triggered, initiates a full device wipe. This wipe erases all data on all profiles, including all Nötkey logs, profile data, and settings.
A factory reset, whether triggered by the panic feature or performed manually, erases all locally stored data. This erasure does not affect:
- Data already backed up to cloud services before the wipe
- Data held by Google Play (subscription records, purchase history)
- Data held by any other cloud service you have used
Nötkey has no ability to erase data that has already left the device.
5. Data retention
Nötkey stores data only on your device. It is retained until:
- You uninstall the app
- You perform a factory reset
- The panic feature is triggered
- You manually clear the app's data through Android Settings
There is no server-side retention of your data by Nötkey in the current version.
6. Children's privacy
Nötkey is not designed for or directed at children under the age of 13. Nötkey does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
7. Data security
The data Nötkey stores on your device is subject to Android's standard file system security and your device's screen lock protection. Nötkey does not implement its own encryption layer on top of Android's security model.
Nötkey's security model is based on Android's multi-user isolation and Device Owner management capabilities. Android's system-level security protects the data within each profile. Nötkey does not claim or imply protection beyond what Android's security architecture provides.
The security of your data depends on:
- Your device's screen lock being set and used
- Your PINs remaining private
- Your device remaining physically in your control
8. Your rights and controls
You control the data stored on your device by Nötkey. You can:
- Uninstall the app at any time. This removes the app and its stored data from your device, but does not remove Device Owner status, which may require a factory reset to remove.
- Clear app data through Android Settings → Apps → Nötkey → Clear data.
- Perform a factory reset to completely erase all Nötkey data and remove Device Owner status.
- Manage your subscription through the Google Play Store.
If you have submitted a support request that included personal information, you may contact us through the in-app support option to request that we delete that information from our records.
9. Third-party services
Nötkey's current version integrates with the following third-party services:
Google Play Billing: Used to process subscription purchases and verify subscription status. Your interaction with Google Play Billing is governed by Google's terms and privacy policy.
Nötkey does not currently integrate with analytics platforms, advertising networks, or other third-party data services.
10. Changes to this policy
If this Privacy Policy changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this document. For significant changes, we will provide notice within the app.
Continued use of Nötkey after a change to this policy constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
11. Contact
For questions about this Privacy Policy or your data, use the in-app support option available through the Nötkey app.
12. Governing law
This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Nötkey's developer is incorporated. Disputes arising from this policy are subject to the dispute resolution terms in the Nötkey Terms of Service.
